Thumbs up 1 dead 5 badly injured as MAS plane plough into House in Borneo

ONE DEAD FIVE BADLY INJURED AS PLANE PLOUGHS INTO HOUSE


KUDAT: One person died while five others were badly injured when a MASWings Twin Otter aircraft that was carrying 16 people crash landed and ploughed into a house near the Kudat airport runway Thursday afternoon.

It was learnt that the aircraft, DHC6 9M-MDM, MH3002 operating from Kota Kinabalu to Kudat, was carrying 16 people including the pilot when it overshot the runway and ended up near a vacant house at Kampung Sin-San, at around 2.50pm.

Although officials were reluctant to give full details it was understood that at the time of the incident. There were very strong winds blowing in the area.

District police chief DSP Dawi Ossen, when contacted said, a male passenger, in his late 60s, succumbed to his injuries while seeking treatment at the Kudat hospital.

“Five other people are still receiving treatment and reported to be in serious but stable condition,” he said when contacted.
He said among those injured were the pilot and co-pilot.

“We are still carrying out investigation at the scene to determine the actual cause of the incident,” he said, adding that the remaining passengers and cabin crews have also been taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, State Fire and Rescue Services Department public relation officer Senior Assistant Superintendent Mohd Affendy Ramin said the department received information of a plane crash 3.15pm and a teams from the Kudat Fire and Rescue Department was deployed to the scene within minutes.

Mohd Affendy added that there were oil spillage in the scene from the aircraft and Fire and Rescue personnel managed to control the situation.

Malaysia Airlines (MAS), in a statement issued in Kuala Lumpur, confirmed that Flight MH3002 flying from Kota Kinabalu to Kudat was involved in the mishap at 2.50 pm.

“No reported fatalities as of now,” said the statement.

“Focus of the airline is on the rescue of passengers and crew,” the MAS statement said.

The cause of the accident was under investigation, he said.

The MAS statement said: “Malaysia Airlines will continue to monitor the situation at the crash site and update on the situation.”

Kudat MP Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri immediately called for an investigation of the accident by the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA).

He said he learnt that there was a strong wind at the time the plane was coming in to land.

Abdul Rahim, who is deputy defence minister, said the Kudat parliamentary office would help the victims of the crash.
