Two hurt as gunman opens fire inside JB pub

Report from The STAR dated 30 March 2013 :-

Two hurt as gunman opens fire inside JB pub

JOHOR BARU: A gunman wearing a full-face helmet entered a pub in Taman Serene here and fired random shots, leaving two men wounded.

Johor Baru (South) OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaacob said the incident occurred at around 11.45pm on Wednesday.

The two victims were between 40 and 50 years old.

One sustained injuries to his chest while the other was shot in the leg.

ACP Zainuddin said the suspect was wearing a full-face helmet and armed with a 9mm semi-automatic gun.

There were 10 people, including pub workers, there when the suspect fired several shots randomly and left the scene. One of the men said he was enjoying the band's performance and had not noticed the gunman.

“Suddenly, I heard six loud bangs. There was a commotion and customers were lying on the floor.

“My elder brother, who was with me, pushed me onto the floor, which was when I realised that I had been shot on my right leg,” he said.

ACP Zainuddin said one of the victims had been warded at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital here and his condition was stable, while the other one had been discharged.

“The police forensic unit recovered five bullet shells at the scene and we are still investigating the motive behind the attack.”

He pointed out that the police had classified the case as attempted murder and investigations were being carried out under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail.

ACP Zainuddin urged those with information to contact the Johor police hotline at 07-221 2999 or the nearest police station.

JB - A tourist destination on the rise

Report from The New Straits Times dated 1 April 2013 :-

JB - A tourist destination on the rise

JOHOR Baru has never had it so good, as far as the hotels are concerned.
Room occupancy is at an all-time high, not only in the state capital, but also in south Johor, which is commonly known as Iskandar Malaysia.

A check with several hotels in the city revealed that the rooms were fully booked until the end of the year.

This is a good sign for Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

The opening of Johor Premium Outlet in Kulaijaya, Legoland Malaysia and Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park, both in Nusajaya, have drawn Singaporeans as well as visitors from out of town.

Travel is a trillion-ringgit industry, and one that is growing too. Everyone likes to travel. Well, most of us do, anyway.

The Renaissance brand has also jumped on the bandwagon, and the five-star Renaissance Johor Baru Hotel in Permas Jaya is expected to next month.

There are 151 Renaissance hotels in 35 countries worldwide. Room rates start at RM300 per night. Its presidential suite is priced at RM5,000 per night, which is actually quite affordable for the elite.

So why has Renaissance checked into Johor? The reason is Johor Baru is now the "happening place".

For many years, Johor Baru has been overlooked by out-of-towners and tourists.

But things have changed. The opening of The Renaissance heralds the start of a brand new Johor Baru.

A chat with The Renaissance sales and marketing director Steven Ong, revealed that church groups from Singapore had made bookings even before the hotel had opened its doors. The hotel is scheduled for a soft launch on April 18 and a grand opening on May 28.

Another hotelier said: "Business in Johor Baru in the last six months has never looked so good, with enquiries coming in from travel agents in Singapore, Japan and Europe.

"Many were interested in packages that included visits to Legoland Malaysia and Universal Studios in Singapore."

He added that the tourists felt that they were in good hands when the tour was organised by the hotel they stayed in.

Nowadays, it is wiser to to check for room availability on the Internet before heading for the destination.Even hotels in the suburbs such as Mersing, Batu Pahat and Kluang will be fully booked, especially during school holidays.

This is because the younger generation, who had left their hometowns in search of greener pastures, are returning to visit their families during the school holidays.

Some have formed their own families and would have to put up at a hotel because of space constraints.

State Tourism, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Hoo Seong Chang said the number of tourists from China was 465,769 in 2011, and 1,149,635 last year.

The number of Chinese tourists in Johor, in particular, surged by 146 per cent from 2011.

The total number of tourists in the state last year is 22,264,380, a 33 per cent increase from 16,728,076 in year before that.

"Of these, visitors from Singapore, followed by Indonesia, made up the bulk of the tourist arrivals,

"These were followed by China, the Philippines, India, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Britain and the Middle East," said Hoo.

He said those from Britain, Hong Kong, China, the Philippines and Japan enjoyed island hopping.

"Johor has eight large islands -- the favourite among tourists being Pulau Aur -- and they are the focus in our tour packages.

Hopefully, Johor will now have a place on the tourist world map just like Penang.

Things are looking up for the state’s tourism industry, with room occupancy at an all-time high in Johor Baru and Iskandar Malaysia.

8 injured in drive-by shooting in JB

Report from The New Straits Times dated 7 April 2013 :-

8 injured in drive-by shooting in JB

JOHOR BARU: 8 people were injured when three gunmen fired shots at a restaurant at Jalan Dedap 24 in Taman Johor Jaya, here, yesterday.
It all started at 1.30am when seven people were set upon by several masked gunmen after they were seated at a round table in the restaurant.

The gunmen, who were in a car, then opened fire on those at the table.

"From the bullet casings found at the scene, at least 13 shots were fired.

"We have established that the weapons used were pistols," said Seri Alam police chief Superintendent Roslan Zainuddin.

The restaurant owner, identified only as Teo, 47, was among those who were shot.

He was warded at Sultan Ismail Hospital following the incident.

Teoh said a car had pulled up at the restaurant while the guests were enjoying their meal.

"The gunmen wore masks and opened fire without getting out of the car.

"They fled after firing shots at random."

Teo was shot in the back and left knee. He said he had invited his friends to his restaurant for a food tasting session.

A restaurant worker, who was in the kitchen at the time, was hit by five shots.

He was reported to be in critical condition and warded at Sultanah Aminah Hospital.

Another restaurant owner, who joined Teo for the food tasting, also sustained serious injuries.

He was reported to have been shot in the neck.

Johor Jaya assemblyman Tan Cher Puk visited Teo at the hospital.

Roslan said the case was classified as attempted murder.

5 popular hangover remedies from around the world

5 popular hangover remedies from around the world

Sunday, Apr 07, 2013
AFP

Pounding head, queasy stomach, dry mouth - welcome to your hangover.

While mankind is united in this particular form of post-bender misery, variations abound when it comes to taming the beast.

Here are a few hangover remedy traditions from drinking cultures around the world.

Hangover cures: The dos and don'ts

1. The coffee-and-aspirin combination
A tried and true method is coffee and over-the-counter painkillers to dull a hangover, and research proves it works. A study published December 2010 in the online science journal PLoS One found that drinking coffee about four hours after a night out works best, since that is when acetate levels begin to spike, which is blamed for causing those crushing hangover headaches.

2. Rehydrate with the right drinks
Juice, water, ginger tea, and sports drinks will make you feel a little better. Fitness blog Blisstree recommends coconut water: "It's chock full of electrolytes (especially potassium) and can rehydrate you pretty quickly."

3. Don't "sweat it out"
While some blogs and websites attest to "sweating it out" with a hot bath or sauna, CNN writes that it could further dehydrate your already dehydrated system. Researchers from the Finnish State Alcohol Company's Research Laboratories in Helsinki warn that taking a sauna after a night of drinking is dangerous, in that it can cause drops in blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms.

4. Drink in moderation
The only real cure for a hangover is not to drink, or to drink in moderation. If you imbibe, sip no more than one alcoholic beverage per hour and remember to hydrate with water. If you are feeling drunk, lay off the cocktails and load up on water, and avoid bubbly and very sweet drinks.

"Everyone will have a method they swear by, but there is no evidence to suggest the hair of the dog, bananas, effervescent drink tablets (containing vitamin B complex and vitamin C), green tea, cabbage, exercise, eggs, fresh air, ginseng and a lot of other hangover cures actually work," wrote health columnist Dr. Luisa Dillner for The Guardian in the UK on Monday.

5. Sleep
Your best bet: go to bed. In eight to 24 hours, you'll feel better, she says.

Like to drink but never had a hangover? A 2008 study from Boston University found that 25 to 30 per cent of people may be resistant to them.

Singapore in RM84m study of MRT link to Johor Bahru

Report from Malaysian Insider dated 13 April 2013 :-

Singapore in RM84m study of MRT link to Johor Bahru

KUALA LUMPUR, April 13 ― Singapore has awarded a S$34.2 million (RM84.11 million) contract to a consortium of infrastructural specialists to study a new Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) link to Johor.

This is believed to be one of the costliest studies awarded so far by Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA), reported The Straits Times.

The consortium is led by Aecom and includes Malaysian architectural firm SA Architects.

The RM84.11 million does not include what the Malaysian government is co-funding, the report said. According to New York, US-listed Aecom’s website, it will cost US$42 million (RM127.78) in total.

Industry players the newspaper spoke to said the price is right although “The Straits Times understands there was at least one bid that was significantly lower.”

The Straits Times report said it was unclear why Singapore is paying two-thirds of the cost of the study, which will be completed by mid-2014.

According to the report, a comprehensive list of cost-and-benefit ratios of various options will be taken into account in this “rare cross-border mass transit link.”

These choices include an undersea tunnel and a viaduct.

It is understood that the study will factor in political risks “as two governments are involved.”

The link, once completed, will have a common immigration checkpoint and two stations: one interchanging with a Singapore MRT line and the other at JB Sentral which will interchange with a KTM line.

Other questions the study will have to answer include which side will provide electricity to run the line and “what happens if there is a breakdown once a train has crossed the border.”

The link is expected to be completed by 2018.

Upgrading of The Zon in the pipeline

Report from The New Straits Times dated 18 April 2013 :-

Upgrading of The Zon in the pipeline

IMPROVEMENTS: The one-stop business-cum-entertainment centre may also be getting a facelift and new name
JOHOR BARU: THE Zon, which comprises the Zon Regency Hotel, Zon Mall and ferry terminal, in Stulang Laut, here, is expected to get a makeover soon.

A source revealed to Streets that the upgrading planned for The Zon is being initiated by Berjaya Group, which has reportedly taken over the property from former owner Kelana Megah Sdn Bhd last month.

The source, however, said that the duty-free outlet, which runs under the name Selasih Ekslusif Sdn Bhd, is not going to be under the new management.

"The proposed upgrading would include adding streetlights, parking bays and installing more closed-circuit television cameras around the premises. This is to boost security and enhance assurance to visitors on their safety, as there had been complaints by the public of illegal parking and poor lighting in the area," he said.

The upgrading is expected to commence in a few months.

The source said there were also plans to give a facelift to the one-stop business-cum-entertainment centre.

"However, no details have been revealed yet. Currently, there are no physical works being done there as the transition process between the old management and new team from Berjaya is still being carried out," he said, adding that most of the 600 staff have been retained.

The source also revealed the possibility of The Zon being renamed with the intention of attracting new customers, while the improved facilities would help to retain the loyal ones.

The Zon offers business-class rooms at The Zon Regency Hotel by the Sea Johor Bahru and convenient shopping experience at its mall with its unique Airport in the City concept. Ferry services to several destinations, including Batam and Tanjung Pinang in Indonesia, are also available from The Zon ferry terminal.

Heavy traffic expected at checkpoints for Labour Day holiday

Report from The Straits Times dated 25 April 2013 :-

Heavy traffic expected at checkpoints for Labour Day holiday

By Joanna Lee, The Straits Times | Thu, Apr 25 2013

Travellers should expect delays from April 30 till May 5. ICA advises travellers to adjust their travel plans if possible or help to ease congestion by car-pooling or using of public transport

Here is the full statement from the ICA:

With the Labour Day holiday coming up on 1 May 2013, traffic flow through the land checkpoints at Woodlands and Tuas is expected to be heavy.

Travellers intending to use the land checkpoints during the peak periods should take note of the following information.

Traffic is expected to be heavy at both checkpoints
Traffic volume at the two land checkpoints is expected to build up from 30 April and will continue till 5 May 2013. Travellers using the land checkpoints during these periods can expect delays.

Travellers have a part to play
To avoid a surge of people and vehicles seeking clearance at the land checkpoints, travellers are advised to adjust their travel plans if possible.

With enhanced security checks, traffic build-up is inevitable, particularly when a large number of travellers use the checkpoints at the same time.

If you must travel during the peak periods and will be driving, you can play a part to ease congestion at the land checkpoints by maintaining lane discipline at all times. You are also encouraged to car-pool or make use of public transport.

Singaporeans issued with the BioPass or registered with the National Registration Office, are encouraged to use the enhanced Immigration Automated Clearance System (eIACS) lanes at the bus halls for immigration clearance. The eIACS allows you to clear immigration through automated lanes within 12 seconds at no additional cost.

Travellers are reminded to ensure that they are carrying their own passports before presenting themselves for immigration clearance at the checkpoints.

The ICA has detected a number of cases where travellers presented the wrong passports for immigration clearance. This has affected clearance efficiency and caused inconvenience to other checkpoint users.

In addition, travellers should also make sure that they do not bring unlawful or prohibited goods into or out of Singapore.

The list of controlled and prohibited items can be found on ICA's website http://www.ica.gov.sg.

Traffic information Travellers leaving Singapore by Woodlands or Tuas Checkpoints will be able to know in advance the traffic situation from LTA's Expressway Monitoring & Advisory System (EMAS) installed along the AYE and BKE respectively. You can also call the traffic information hotline at 6863-0117, listen to TrafficWatch on the radio or visit LTA's One Motoring website to check the latest traffic conditions at the land checkpoints before embarking on your journey.

Security is our utmost concern Our borders are our first line of defence in safeguarding Singapore's security. The enhanced security checks are critical to our nation's security. The ICA will put in every effort and continue to take the necessary measures to improve clearance efficiency as much as possible without compromising security. We seek your understanding and cooperation, as your security is our utmost concern.

A spoon of beer enough to make you happy

A spoon of beer enough to make you happy
April 29, 2013

The study shows how the taste of beer alone can elicit a dopamine response.

INDIANAPOLIS: Just a spoon of beer may trigger the happy hormone, says a research. But how exactly do alcohols react with your body?

We all knew drinking makes us feel ‘happy’, but just the taste of it? A study conducted by neurologists at the University of Indiana, reveals that sipping a spoon of beer is enough to trigger the release of the happy hormone dopamine in the brain.

The researchers got 49 men to take small sips of beer every 15 minutes, while their brains were scanned for dopamine. The men, averaging 25 years in age, showed a rise in their dopamine levels on having only a spoonful of beer.

The most striking aspect of the finding, researchers say, is how the taste of beer alone, without its intoxicating effect, can elicit a dopamine response. While the scientists have tested only beer, the study prompts us to take a look at how alcohol reacts with our bodies, and whether different alcohols work differently in our systems.

True lies
Over time, every alcohol has earned its dubious reputation. Gin is accused of making us mean, vodka is blamed for reckless behaviour, tequila is associated with rowdiness and rum is said to mellow us down. These general perceptions, if you ask scientists, are totally unfounded.
Studies have established that almost all alcohol is essentially ethyl alcohol, and such perceptions of experiencing ‘different highs’ from different alcohols are mostly psychological; driven by mood, memories, surroundings and other factors.

Percentage matters
One reason why different alcohols react differently in your body is the percentage of alcohol your choice of drink has. While beer has around 4% ABV (Alcohol By Volume), whiskey, rum, gin and vodka are usually ten times stronger, hovering at around 40% ABV. It’s a no-brainer then that if two people were to have the same amounts of whiskey and beer, the dude chugging whiskey would get knocked out faster.

Apart from the speed at which you down your drink, what also matters is how you drink it.

Since alcohol is a simple molecule that’s rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, vodka shots or tequila shots will shoot up your blood alcohol level faster, getting you high in no time.

Body talk
Once alcohol leaves your mouth, it takes only three minutes for it to reach your brain. While 20% of it is instantly absorbed into the bloodstream through the stomach walls, the remaining 80% is processed slowly through the small intestine and into the bloodstream.

As a natural mechanism, your body constantly tries to flush out alcohol from the system. The heart pumps the alcohol-heavy blood through the body till it sends the alcohol to the liver, which breaks it down. The liver, in fact, oxidises more than 90 per cent of it into water and carbon dioxide. The rest is excreted through breath, urine and saliva.

Again, since ABV is the critical factor, your system absorbs vodka faster than it would absorb beer.

Fizzy does it
Alcohol enters your blood stream faster when it’s mixed with a cola or an energy drink. This happens mostly because the fizz causes some distention in your stomach, which in turn speeds up the alcohol’s movement from the stomach into the small intestine, where alcohol is taken in more rapidly. The booze, therefore, ends up entering the blood stream faster.

What you mix with your drink also determines its potency because alcohol is a depressant and a sedative, whereas sugary energy drinks and colas are packed with caffeine, making the combination more of a stimulant.

Science wise
Alcohol irritates the stomach lining more if you have it on an empty stomach. So before knocking back a few drinks, have a glass of milk or a quick meal that contains some fat. Studies say that since fat digests slowly, it protects your stomach and slows the rate at which alcohol rushes into your system. As for dehydration, a simple rule can offset it: one glass of water for every glass of alcohol.
